taro toyama was raised in an orphanage from a young age, . unaware of who his parents were or what happened to leave him without any other family. . though a well-behaved and kind child, . he ran away at sixteen to find his parents, . and was saved from being taken in by the police by detective utsugi, . who saw his past self in taro.he took taro in, . allowing him to live at his agency, . and taro became his assistant, . often by pretending to be a high school student to investigate, . before eventually becoming a detective and taking on cases of his own.once he discovers the truth of his parentage, . taro struggles with the loss of a family he never knew and reassesses what it means to unemotionally analyze a crime scene, . especially the dead bodies of those who are loved. . he has a strong distaste for those who sensationalize crime, . who mask their thirst for blood by championing journalism. . taro treats each victim as a person of value rather than a subject of interest, . desiring to grant them the humanity their murderer stole.above all, . taro fears failure, . particularly in failing to protect loved ones or to solve a case. . he feels undeserving of the good fortune he's had yet is keenly aware that he has very little due to his upbringing. . he does not wish to be seen as unworthy by others, . that his inherited wealth should not have gone to an unproven child. . taro holds himself to high standards, . regretting that he never graduated high school and wondering if the man he's become is one his parents would be proud of.

kang seung-ah was killed for her father's crimes by the underworld he desperately tried to leave behind. . his employers, . unable to find the man who screwed them over, . went after the next best thing... . her.bleeding out in an alleyway, . she prayed to god to save her and heard nothing, . so she prayed to whoever would listen and got an answer. . in final, gasping breaths, . a deal was made for her to live beyond life, . for her body to seek revenge even after her spirit had passed. . but in the moment of her death, . seung-ah was reborn instead.her body is seung-ah's; . her soul is the demon's; . and her mind is a blend of the two. . the memory of seung-ah remains, . an emotional shackle that binds the demon to her flesh. . they exist as one and neither, . weakened by mundane desires and driven to revenge.currently, . seung-ah works as a criminal informant known as nemesis. . she buys and sells information using her demonic abilities, . often preying upon those with sin in their hearts, . building a reputation that will get her closer to those who killed her.

○. straight out of school, kotone awaki entered the rat race. she struggled in an abusive workplace until her grandfather passed away and left her his beloved coffee shop, the café enchanté.○. when reopening the café, kotone discovered the café sat upon a tangle of interwoven ley lines and was home to a magical door which allowed passage from the human world into other worlds. her grandfather had been the guardian of this door, and had opened the rooms on the third floor to non-humans who came through.○. kotone now runs the café and finds herself happier in self-employment than she's every been much of which is due to her regular patrons who've invited her into their non-human worlds.
